The Mitchell Institute awards a scholarship each year to a graduating senior from every public high school in Maine. The scholarship award is for $8,000 with the award paid out in four equal installments of $2,000. Students pursuing a two-year degree are eligible for up to four years of scholarship support if they continue their education beyond the initial two years. With this scholarship comes an array of personal, academic and professional support programs along with a network of over 2,000 Mitchell Scholars, Alumni, and partners. The focus of the Mitchell Institute has always been, and continues to be, Maine students attending Maine colleges and universities. In an effort to help as many Maine students as possible obtain a higher education, the Mitchell Institute also has scholarships available for Maine students planning to attend college out of state.

Requirements and Criteria for Selection
To be eligible, each recipient must be a legal resident of Maine and must plan to attend a four-year or two-year degree program at an accredited college or university and must be a graduating senior from a public high school in Maine. Applicants must also be planning to enter their first year of college by the fall semester immediately following their high school graduation year.Recipients will be chosen by the Board of Directors of the Mitchell Institute. Recipients will be chosen from applications submitted by eligible students based on the following criteria:

  • Academic performance/academic potential
  • Community impact
  • Financial need

Deadlines and Required Materials
To apply for the Mitchell Scholarship, please complete and submit the online application form by April 1. We request the following supporting materials:

  • High school transcript
  • Student Aid Report (SAR) generated from FAFSA
  • Counselor or teacher recommendation
  • Your college choice (Acceptance letter is recommended)
  • Financial aid award letter from your college

Prior to April 1, materials may be submitted online with the application form. After April 1, mail or fax materials before May 1 to:
