Senator George J. Mitchell inducted into Maine Sports Hall of Fame

Twelve Mitchell Scholars and Mitchell Institute Development Director Sarah Short joined hundreds at the Augusta Civic Center on Sunday, May 4th, to celebrate and honor Senator George J. Mitchell and eight other 2014 inductees to the Maine Sports Hall of Fame.

Senator Mitchell was praised for his success and accomplishments on the Bowdoin College men’s basketball team, as well as for his role in two major sports investigations. He led an investigation into the use of performance-enhancing drugs in Major League Baseball in 2006, ultimately producing the 2007 Mitchell Report, and he served as an independent third-party athletics integrity monitor in 2012 in the wake of the Penn State sex abuse scandal. Senator Mitchell also served on the Board of Directors for the Boston Red Sox.

In his remarks, Senator Mitchell stressed the positive role sports play in the lives of many Maine young people, and the importance of encouraging our youth to work hard and achieve their best at school, on the playing field, and in all their endeavors.

The Maine Sports Hall of Fame includes individuals who have “made a major contribution to the development and advancement of sports in the state of Maine” and have brought “distinction and honor to the state of Maine in any field of sport.”
