To aid you with completing the Financial section of the Scholarship application, we offer the tip-filled video below and — below the video — a set of step-by-step written instructions. If you have questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us at info@mitchellinstitute.org.
1. Finding and Submitting the FSS (FAFSA Submission Summary)
You’ll be able to find and access the FSS (FAFSA Submission Summary) once your FAFSA form is processed, which, according to the U.S. Dept. of Education, usually takes one to three business days.
If your FAFSA form processed successfully, you can view your FAFSA Submission Summary by
- Logging in to StudentAid.gov using your FSA ID (account username and password);
- Selecting your processed FAFSA submission from the “My Activity” page, which will bring you to the Status Center “Details” page; and
- Selecting “View FAFSA Submission Summary.”
To print/save your FSS as a PDF that can be uploaded to the Mitchell Scholarship application, click the link as indicated by the red arrow below.
If you are unable to print/save your FSS as a PDF, please take screenshots of each page and put them in one document to upload to the Scholarship application.
2. Noting Your Household Income on the Scholarship Application
- Please submit your household income (or Adjusted Gross Income) from 2 years ago, just as you did when you filed that information for the FAFSA.
- Your AGI (Adjusted Gross Income) appears on line 11 of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Form 1040.
- If you are a dependent student, please submit your entire family income (AGI).
- If you are an independent student, please submit your own AGI.
- If you aren’t sure if you are an independent student, there is a link right in the application that can provide you with information that can help you determine the answer.
3. Filing the SAI (Student Aid Index) Number on the Scholarship Application
To find the SAI number, please refer to the section of the FSS (FAFSA Submission Summary) indicated by the arrow below:
The SAI number may range in size from -1500 to six digits. Please enter the SAI number on the Scholarship application exactly as it appears on your FSS, even if you don’t believe you or your family will be able to contribute that amount to your college education. The number we require is indicated by the arrow below.
4. Please Use the Additional Information Box If You Have More Financial Information to Share with Us
If you believe you have extenuating financial circumstances that are not reflected by the FSS and SAI, please use the Additional Information Box on the application (see screenshot below) to provide us with the details. Examples of additional financial information might include unexpected medical bills that your family has had to pay, a change in a parent’s employment status, a parent’s divorce or remarriage, or if you are FAFSA ineligible.
