Just weeks ahead of his 90th birthday, Senator George J. Mitchell did something that the pandemic and his bout with leukemia have prevented him from doing over the past five years: personally congratulate new Mitchell Scholars at the annual Welcome Celebration and share some life wisdom as they begin their college journeys.
To the surprise and delight of Scholars and their families, the American architect of Northern Ireland’s historic 1998 peace accord, U.S. Senator, and founder of the Mitchell Institute addressed the gathering — and received a standing ovation. His presence at the Welcome Celebration on Saturday, Aug. 5, at the Wells Conference Center on the University of Maine campus also drew the attention of News Center Maine, which requested interviews with the Senator for an evening news story and for a two-part series that aired on “207” shortly before his birthday.
